DataBank (databank.worldbank.org) is an online web resource that provides simple and quick access to collections of time series data. It has advanced functions for selecting and displaying data, performing customized queries, downloading data and creating charts and maps. Users can create dynamic custom reports based on their selection of countries, indicators and years. All these reports can be easily edited, shared and embedded as widgets on websites or blogs.

How do I start?

You can use DataBank as either an unregistered or registered user. Unregistered users can generate customized reports, view tables, charts and maps and download data. Registered users have all of these options plus the ability to save data selections in the system, render it at any point in time, share tables, charts and maps with other users, and embed data visualizations directly into blogs or websites.

Create a login name and password using an existing email address by clicking on the New User? Sign Up » button on the left side of the page. Once you have an account click on the Log in Now >> button under My DataBank. When you are redirected to the DataBank home page, access database by clicking on the Databases tab on the left side of the page or select a database from the list under Explore Databases.

How do I select countries?

There are three ways to make country selections after you have chosen a database:

1. Scroll through the list under the Country tab and check the boxes to indicate your selection.

2. Choose the first letter of the country name in the alphabet bar at the top of the screen, and then check the boxes to indicate your selection.

3. Type the name of the country in the search bar located at the top of the page, and then check the boxes to indicate your selection.

Use the Dimension Filters panel on the left side to narrow the country selection list by specifying the dimensions of your search. For example, you can view only countries located in South Asia by selecting Region and South Asia in the filter options.

How do I view country and indicator notes/metadata?

Notes containing indicator or country specific information can be viewed by clicking on the “eye” icon to the left of each indicator name.

How do I select indicators?

There are three ways to make indicator selections after you have chosen a database:

1. Scroll through the list under the Series tab and check the boxes to indicate your selection.

2. Choose the first letter of the indicator name in the alphabet bar at the top of the page, and then check the boxes to indicate your selections.

3. Type the name of the indicator in the search bar located at the top of the page, and then check the boxes to indicate your selection.

Use the Dimension Filters panel on the left side to narrow the indicator selection list by specifying the dimensions of your search. For example, you can view only indicators related to Land Use by selecting Environment and Land Use in the filter options.

How do I select the years?

There are three different ways to select time after you have chosen a database:

1. Select the time span by using the year range slider.

2. Click on Search and type a year into the search field, or use the filters: View Recent Years: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 50 and then clicking “select all” or checking the boxes to indicate your selection.

3. Create a customized time period by clicking on the Functions tab. Fill out the parameters for Title, Type and Span of years then click Add. The customized time period is now added to your time selections and will appear in the right column under Your Current Selection.

Note: The operation will be performed on all selected series. You should be aware that some results may be inaccurate (e.g., growth rates on current price series) and caution should be observed when using this function.

How do I edit the list of countries, indicators and years I have selected?

Edit your selection in the Your Current Selection section on the right side of the page. To edit the list of countries click on the Country tab, to edit the list of indicators click on the Series tab and to edit the list of years click on the Time tab. Make sure to click on Apply Changes after making editing selections.

Delete an indicator, country or year from my selection

To delete anything from your selection list, click on the “x” to the left of the indicator, country or year.

Change the order indicators, countries or years appear in the table or chart. There are two ways to do this:

1. Select the indicator, country or year and drag to rearrange the order.

2. Click the Sort button under either the series, country or year tab.  This will sort the countries/indicators alphabetically and years chronologically.

  • View all selected variables. By default only 20 variables are displayed in the current selection fields. To view all the variables you have selected, click on View all under Country, Series or Time.

 

How do I view all the data that I have selected?

You can view the data as a Table, Chart or Map, or download the data file to your computer. When you have finished making selections of countries, indicators and years, select one of the viewing options by clicking on the Table, Chart, Map or Download buttons from the toolbar on the top of the page.

Why doesn’t the Table show all of the data I have selected?

By default the Table shows all the indicators and years for one country from your selection. To view the data for other countries you have chosen, click on the arrow next to the country name and select a different country from the list.    

How do I customize my Table?  

You can customize the way data is displayed by clicking on the Table options icon from the toolbar. Here is where you can change data orientation, increase or decrease the number of rows displayed per page, format numbers, change chart type & style and add headers and footers. Customize

Once you have selected the changes you would like to make, click on Apply Changes under Table Options heading.

How do I choose the type of Chart for visualizing my data?

The default chart type is a line chart.  Change the type of chart by clicking on the Chart options icon from the toolbar. Click on the Chart Type & Style tab and select the chart type from the dropdown list. Click on Apply Changes under Chart Options heading. Customize

You can modify the X and Y-axis by clicking on the Customize icon under Chart Type & Style. This allows you to graph variables with different scales. For example chart GDP % growth and GDP in millions of dollars on the same chart. Select the chart type, which variable you want to display on the primary and secondary axis from the dropdowns. Select a color, create a label and set the scales for the primary and secondary axis. Click on Apply Changes under Chart Options heading.

How do I customize my Map?

Maps can be customized by clicking on the Map options icon from the toolbar. Here is where you can adjust the size of your map, choose from a preset style or create your own, format numbers and add a header or footer. Customize

Once you have selected the changes you would like to make, click on Apply Changes under Table Options heading.

How do I edit my country/series/year selection once I have the Table/Chart or Map open?

You can always add/remove or rearrange the order of countries, indicators or years while you are viewing the table, chart or map. Add or remove data by clicking on the Edit Selection icon and clicking on the variable tab (country, series or time) you want to edit. You can then unselect an indicator, country or year you have previously chosen, rearrange the order by clicking and dragging or clicking on the sort button, or add additional indicators, countries or years by clicking on the Add more button. How do I download Data?

Once you have selected countries, indicators and years you can download the data to your computer by clicking on the Download icon from the toolbar. Select the format for your report (Excel, CSV, TXT, or SDMX) and click Download.

How do I save, access and delete my reports?

Save reports

First you must log in to DataBank as a registered user. Once you generate a table, chart or map, you save the report by clicking the Save to my reports icon in the toolbar.  You will then be prompted to provide a title for your report, add a short description (optional) and create a custom folder for it. Selecting the option of saving the report as a shared report means it will be available for all DataBank users to see. When you are done, click the Save button. Your report is now available for future use and customization.

Access your saved reports from the DataBank Homepage by clicking on the Saved Reports button on the left side of the page and opening the My Reports tab.

Delete reports

Edit or delete your saved reports by accessing the Saved Reports section of the DataBank homepage on the left side of the page. On the My reports tab, you can click on the Edit or Delete links found under each report.

How do I share my Table/ Chart/ Map on social media?

Click on the Share this query icon in the toolbar.  This will provide you with a permanent link to the report, which you can copy and paste into any type of social media. You also have the option to directly post the table, chart or map on Twitter, Facebook or Google+ by clicking on the respective icons.

How do I embed tables, charts and maps?

Click on the Embed icon in the toolbar. Here is your chance to customize your widget. When you are done copy the embed code and drop into the blog or website.
